Bellefontaine, Ohio

Bellefontaine is the county seat of Logan County and the largest city in it — 14,115 residents at the 2020 Census, across 10.10 square miles. It was platted in 1820 and incorporated in 1835, and it sits about 48 miles northwest of Columbus. When people from outside the county name one place here, this is usually the one.

Two facts about it are genuinely national. Campbell Hill, inside the city limits about two miles northeast of downtown, is the highest point in Ohio at 1,549 feet. And Court Avenue is the first concrete-paved street in the United States, laid in 1891. McKinley Street, also downtown, is claimed as America's shortest street. Those three sit within a few minutes of each other, which is a strange and specific thing for one small city to be able to say.

Downtown has had steady redevelopment since 2012, and the area was designated an Opportunity Zone in 2018. Today, that redevelopment is reflected in an active downtown filled with locally owned restaurants, coffee shops, stores, entertainment, and places for visitors to stay.

The Holland Theatre is on the National Register — a Dutch atmospheric theatre, one of the few of its kind, and it reopened in 2019 after a long restoration. The Logan County Courthouse, built in 1870, is also on the National Register. The Logan County History Center and Transportation Museum is here, and Umbrella Avenue and Rainbow Row are the two alleys people photograph.

The railroad is why any of this exists at the scale it does. Bellefontaine was a major hub, and in the 1890s the Big Four Railroad built what was described at the time as the largest roundhouse between New York and St. Louis. Bellefontaine's railroad history can still be seen in its street layout and older homes. Those properties can offer wonderful character, but each one deserves a careful evaluation. Schools: Bellefontaine City Schools runs four buildings — Elementary for PK-2 at 1001 Ludlow Road, Intermediate for grades 3-5 at 509 North Park, Middle School for 6-8 at 1201 Ludlow Road, and the High School for 9-12 at 555 East Lake Avenue. Enrollment is roughly 2,840 students. The Ohio Hi-Point Career Center, a regional career-technical school, sits atop Campbell Hill in the city, which is a real option to know about if you have a student heading toward a trade.

Just outside the city there are things that pull people here on weekends: Mad River Mountain, the ski resort; Indian Lake; and Marmon Valley Farm over in Zanesfield. Although these attractions are outside the city limits, they are close enough to add to the recreation and lifestyle available to Bellefontaine residents.

The event calendar runs all year. The Logan County Fair is in July. The Chocolate Walk is in February, the Great Pumpkin Walk in October, Downtown Days in the warm months, and the holiday parade and Santa Shed in December.
