West Liberty is home for much of my work and an important part of the community I serve. It is a village of 1,770 people by the 2020 Census, a little over a square mile of ground, sitting at the junction of US-68 and State Route 245 in Logan County. The Mad River runs along the edge of the village. People have been living here since 1817, and the street pattern still shows it.
Many people are pleasantly surprised by how many visitors and local attractions a village of this size supports. Ohio Caverns is right outside town, and the Piatt Castles — Mac-A-Cheek and Mac-O-Chee, two limestone mansions built in the 1800s — are open to visitors. Between the two of them, West Liberty sees a steady stream of people who came from somewhere else on purpose. For a village of under two thousand, that is unusual, and it shapes what the business district can support.
The Simon Kenton Bike Path runs through the village. It covers roughly seventeen miles, from Springfield up through West Liberty and on to Bellefontaine, on the old rail grade. For buyers who value walking or biking access, living near the trail can be a meaningful benefit. Lions Club Community Park is the village's main outdoor space — ball diamonds, horseshoe pits, a walking track and shelter houses, laid out along Onion Creek. The splash pad is separate and gets used hard from June through August. In Town Hall there is the Flag of Stone, the village's 9/11 memorial. The Logan County District Library keeps a branch here, which matters more than people expect when they are deciding between here and somewhere further out.
On schools, I want to be precise, because both of these statements are true at the same time and the combination confuses people every year. The village of West Liberty is in Logan County. The West Liberty-Salem school campus is in Salem Township, Champaign County, just south of the village line. The district straddles the county line. So a West Liberty address is a Logan County address, and the school it feeds is on the Champaign County side of the line. West Liberty-Salem Local Schools runs an elementary for kindergarten through fifth, a middle school for sixth through eighth, and a high school for ninth through twelfth, with the district office and the high school at 7208 US Highway 68 North. Enrollment across K-12 runs around 1,120. A high school athletic field house is due to be finished in the fall of 2026.
Marie's Candies has been making chocolate by hand since 1956 in a beautifully restored train depot, and it remains one of the local businesses most closely connected with West Liberty.
The calendar is full for a place this size. The Lions Labor Day Festival and the Ohio Fish and Shrimp Festival in September are the two biggest. Beyond those there is the Summer Street Market and Car Show in June, the Ice Cream Social in July, the BOSS Summer Run 5K in August, and then Christmas in the Village, the Christmas Parade and the Tour of Homes in December. There is an antique tractor parade every year as well.
Two names from here you may run across: Donn Piatt, the journalist, and Benjamin Piatt Runkle, one of the founders of Sigma Chi.
