Indian Lake is a lake community in northwestern Logan County, built around a 5,100-acre reservoir that the Ohio Department of Natural Resources operates as Indian Lake State Park. When I say Indian Lake, I mean the whole lake region: the Village of Lakeview on the west shore (ZIP 43331), the Village of Russells Point on the south shore (43348), the Village of Huntsville a few miles east of the water (43324), and the shoreline, channels and islands in between, much of which lies in the surrounding townships rather than inside a village. The 2020 Census counted 1,184 people in Lakeview, 1,320 in Russells Point and 408 in Huntsville. Those three figures do not include the homes along the lake outside the village limits, so the lake area is larger than the village numbers alone suggest.
The water is the reason people come here, and the state park is how most of it is used. ODNR lists 5,100 acres of water, a campground on State Route 235 north of Lakeview with electric and full hook-up sites, and two public swimming beaches, Old Field Beach and Fox Island Beach, with about 1,400 feet of lake access between them. There are five launch ramps and roughly 500 seasonal dock rentals spread across Lakeview Harbor, Blackhawk, Moundwood and Chippewa, plus transient docks at Lakeview Harbor and Cranetown Island. On land there is a 3.5-mile paved bike trail along the old reservoir embankment between Russells Point and Lakeview, the 1.4-mile Cherokee Trail and the 0.82-mile Pew Island loop. The lake is full of islands: the Indian Isles chain, including Lake Ridge, Shawnee, Seminole, Sunset, Pew, Miami, Tecumseh and Minnewauken, is permanently connected by bridges, while others such as Crystal Beach, Turtle Shell, Big Walnut and Oak Island are reached only by water and still carry summer homes.
Lakeview sits on the west side of the lake on State Route 235. The village was platted in 1881 and incorporated in 1895, the same year the Toledo and Ohio Central railroad arrived. Village offices are at 126 North Main Street, the Lakeview Branch of the Logan County Libraries is next door at 130 North Main, and the post office is at 160 South Main. The village has a protected harbor with docks and a boat ramp, and it maintains Lakeview School Park on West Lake Street. Community Markets on Township Road 239 is the grocery store at the lake. The state park campground and Old Field Beach are both on State Route 235 just north of the village. I have listed a home in Lakeview, so I know the village side of the lake from the seller's chair as well as the buyer's.
Russells Point is the village on the south shore, on US 33, with State Routes 366, 708 and 720 running through it. A post office opened here in 1913 and the village incorporated in 1928. Its lakefront was once Sandy Beach Amusement Park, and the arched steel footbridge the park built across the harbor in 1924 still stands; it was refurbished and rededicated in August 2014 and has become the recognized symbol of the lake community. Mary Rutan Health opened its Indian Lake Health Center at 120 West Main Street in early 2026, a remodeled 10,000-square-foot building with primary care, laboratory, x-ray, orthopedics, obstetrics and gynecology, podiatry, urology and behavioral health. The Indian Lake Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau keeps its office at 8200 State Route 366, the village municipal building is at 433 State Route 708, and the Indian Lake Farmers Market sets up in the Mary Rutan parking lot on Friday evenings from Memorial Day to Labor Day. I represented a buyer in Russells Point, so I have walked this part of the shoreline with a client.
Huntsville is the third village, east of the lake where State Route 274 meets State Route 117, with US 33 passing along its southwest edge. It was platted in 1846, named for the government surveyor Aaron L. Hunt, and incorporated in 1865. Village offices are at 6740 Wishart Street and the post office is at 6493 Lima Street. Because the Huntsville ZIP code reaches west toward the lake, businesses on the east side of the water such as Cranberry Resort on State Route 368 and LaPizzeria on State Route 366 carry a Huntsville address even though they are well outside the village. That is worth knowing when you search by town name, because a Huntsville address can mean the village itself or the east side of the lake.
Schools: the Indian Lake Local School District covers the northwestern part of Logan County, and its three buildings are together in Lewistown, south of the lake. Indian Lake Elementary School at 8770 County Road 91 serves preschool through grade 4, Indian Lake Middle School at 8920 County Road 91 serves grades 5-8, and Indian Lake High School at 6210 State Route 235 North serves grades 9-12. Federal school data for 2024-25 shows roughly 530, 390 and 440 students in those buildings, about 1,360 in all. Indian Lake High School students who choose a career-technical program attend Ohio Hi-Point Career Center at 2280 State Route 540 in Bellefontaine. District lines around a lake are not always where a mailing address suggests, so I confirm the district for any specific property before we write an offer.
Local businesses here lean toward the water, and so does the calendar. Spend-A-Day Marina on State Route 708 in Russells Point has sold and serviced boats since 1950, and Newland's Resort on Township Road 266 in Lakeview offers cottages, docks and boat storage. For food and drink there are Indian Lake Brewing Company, Indian Lake Pizza & Subs and Woody's Diner in Russells Point; Froggy's at the Lake, Buckeye at The Lake, Padrone's Pizza and La Playa Cocina & Cantina in Lakeview; and Cranberry Resort, LaPizzeria, Desperados Bar & Grill and Camp Brewing on the Huntsville side. The Light Up the Lake fireworks are launched from the south bank around the Fourth of July, presented by the chamber and visitors bureau with the state park. The Ring of Fire, held since 1965 on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend, is the evening when flares are lit around the entire shoreline at nine o'clock to mark the end of summer. The Indian Lake State Park Fall Festival fills the campground's C-Area on a late-September weekend with food and craft vendors, and the Indian Lake Historical Society lights a tree at the Sandy Beach Bridge at the end of November.
On history: the lake began as a group of seven small natural lakes and ponds. In 1850 the Ohio General Assembly resolved to use them as a water supply for the Miami and Erie Canal, and between 1851 and 1860 roughly three miles of earthen dam were built to join them into the Lewistown Reservoir at a cost of $340,000. By 1893 the reservoir covered 6,334 acres with 29 miles of shoreline. On April 9, 1898 the General Assembly dedicated it as a recreation area under the name Indian Lake, and in 1949 it became part of the newly created Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Sandy Beach Amusement Park opened at Russells Point in 1924 with a 2,000-foot wooden roller coaster and the Minnewawa Dance Hall, ran through the 1975 season, and was demolished in the early 1980s. The 1924 footbridge is what remains.
